Discharge Printing Bandanas
I’ve had a few conversations with clients regarding bandana printing and the question about Discharge Printing Bandanas comes up on a regular basis. There is some confusion around discharge printing vs. plastisol printing which I will attempt to clarify and outline here.
Screen Printing is a method of printing. Plastisol Inks, Acrylic Inks and Discharge Inks are all types of ink. When trying to understand projects that involve discharge printing bandanas, the key concept to understand is “method” vs. “ink”. We utilize screen printing as the “method of delivery” for discharge inks. Many customers call and and tell us that they don’t want screen printed bandanas. The disconnect often occurs when a customer believes that screen printing is what causes a rough feel on a bandana. Screen printing is not the cause of a rough bandana print, the ink set use is the culprit. Discharge inks are water based with light pigment added. The best analogy of what discharge printing offers is to consider it as a “precise bleaching” or “tie-dye” process.
When processing discharge printing bandanas orders, our production team doesn’t really print your design on the bandana, we actually remove your design from the bandana. Using the precise method of discharge printing, or precise bleaching, we remove the bandana pigment and replace it with new pigment. In the case of custom bandanas, the pigments and areas of the bandana that are replaced, are your design.
Printing your logo or design on top of a bandana, leaves a rough feel, removing the bandana pigment, and replacing it with new pigment, offers a solution for a much softer feeling custom bandana.
